Veoh Network Info
For those of you who want to learn a bit more about the TV Network project I'm working with (and how it needs YOU) keep reading...
(Or if you just want a sneak peek at the state of the World in 8 months)
I WANT YOU!
To help change the world.

HOW?!

A new Television Network called “Veoh” is about to launch and needs your help.

This Network is quite different. Veoh integrates the Internet Media Technologies (p2p, broadband, RSS, tags, torrents, DivX, more) to allow for unlimited distribution of unlimited shows. (Let that sink in…it changes EVERYTHING.)

Anyone with a video camera can broadcast. Any type of show is welcome.

This means that:

Everyone in the world can program their own TV channel.
Everyone in the world can produce their own shows.

No longer will white men in boardrooms decide what we see. The Hollywood machine of pitching and schmoozing and lowest-common-denominator programming...is about to be extinct (or at least made vastly less powerful).

IS THIS FOR REAL?

Yes. Veoh just finished up a round of venture capital funding and is poised for launch in a month. There is currently a room full of programmers finishing up the product beta.

Disclaimer:

Even though it has big name venture capitalists backing it, there is no guarantee that Veoh will blow up like we intend to. There is no doubt the Media Revolution will happen, but nobody knows how it will play out. This project, by it's nature, is a gamble on the future.

But I've always been willing to take some risks in the name of idealism. I would rather be bruised from fighting the good fight, than fat from feasting on status quo (you like that? That just came to me.)

That being said, I've never been involved in something quite this big and never so early. This feels like Tim Berners-Lee just learned over my cubicle and said, "Hey, are you ready for a shift?"

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU:

To help steer this revolution, I have been charged with kick-starting the Veoh programming. (When the world catches up in 6 months, this won't be an issue. But for now, I need 2 things:

  1. Video Makers (info coming soon.)
  2. Program Directors/Channel Editors (no experience necessary)

Program Directors/Channel Editors are the ones who will help me assemble “featured channels” and help lead them. It’s kinda like a TV version of a Forum Moderator.

I need to find people who care about something…anything. (A political view, type of music, a sport, a technology, PETA, GLBT, The Environment, etc.)

I need these people to help find video content that backs up the voice or shows off the talent that you dig (or have).

If you were putting together the “Bush Sucks” Channel, what type of shows would it have?

Most of this role (initially) will simply be contacting people who are already making videos that you like. Find good stuff and get the creators to enter it into the Veoh system. And if the content you want doesn’t exists, feel free to MAKE it!!

Let me put this in perspective:
If you have ever felt like you didn’t have a voice in this big ‘ol world...
I want to hand you a global microphone.

The Channel leaders will be powerful voices in the digital revolution. Political voices, social cause voices, or voices of entertainment. Then next wave of Jon Stewarts will not be picked by white old men in Network board rooms. They will be the voices chosen by the people.

WHAT WILL THE JOB ENTAIL:

  1. Defining the scope of your channel (Do you have an agenda? Or just entertain? Or?)
  2. Finding people making (or who have made) video content that fits (And that you like. Remember, this is your vehicle. Include only what you like… screw fair and balanced!)
  3. Helping these people submit their Shows into the Veoh system (easy)
  4. Creating videos /Vlogs (Optional. And plenty of help avail.)
  5. Reviewing shows submitted to be on your channel.
  6. Maintaining a Channel Web page (minimal)

Most of the time will be doing #2. AND I WILL HELP YOU!

I’m not sure what the actual time commitment will be like. 4-10 hours a week, maybe? This is new territory and we’ll have to figure it out together. And you can bail at any time.

example as I see it:

Let's say I want to make a channel about dance culture/DJ's or something.

I would research and find out what is out there. Who is making videos out of DJ performances, dance club footage, interviews with DJs.

I'd find some websites that have ongoing shows that distribute through their website. So I would contact the people who do "DanceBoogie Move of the week" and explain to them how to get their content into Veoh.

Most of these people making video for the web are making it postage stamp sized to save bandwidth bills. Since we remove the bandwidth issue, we need to get these folks to re-export their work at full screen resolution. Veoh is to be watched full screen, or on a TV.

If I know people that *should* be making shows, I would encourage them to do so. And educate them of the new venue at their disposal.

I also might start making my own show. Maybe I would interview local DJs and DJ's playing in town. Or video tape local go-go dancers. Or See if a DJ friend would be up for making a "how to DJ" series of shows.

NOTE: Veoh *does* have a built in way to charge for viewing. So if people don't want to give it away for free, they don't have to. (Of course we may want to coach them about the value for offering the first few for free. "Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From Crack Dealers.")

Again, we'll work together on all this.

REWARDS

This is not a job for pay. The rewards are different. This is a chance to shine the spotlight on any voice or talent that you think deserves it. (Even your own.) It is also a ground floor seat for this massive cultural shift. It WILL happen. WIll you watch it? Or will you make it?

If your channel becomes popular, you'll become known. This revolution IS happening. And whoever is on the forefront is going to be the ones in magazine articles, interviews, etc.. When the old school media needs sound bites, they are going to be asking YOU.

And for those of you less concerned with mere fame, you’ll also be steering the path of the global consciousness.
That sounds like a bold claim…but I assure you we are all on the cusp of a shift.
TV and Web are converging into a world of unlimited viewing options. Veoh is poised to be the framework for this new world media.

The Media Revolution is upon us…and I'm asking you to enlist.

INTERESTED?

Yay! No need to commit now. Just shoot me an email Halcyon@veoh.com
Include:

1) Your location:
2) Your interests (possible channel focus, NOT a commitment)
3) Your experience with Video (if any)
4) Anything else on your mind. (optional)

If you want to send me your phone number, we can arrange a time to talk on the phone, too.

Thanks for taking the time to read. I hope we can work together now or share video in the very near future. :)

Love,
-Halcyon

Wow, this sounds so cool! I'd love to participate, but my main goals these days are keeping clean diapers on the baby and getting enough sleep. ;D

Greetings.

I have just shot off an email to you, however, I have a feeling it may end up in your junkmail / spam mail. So I wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks for posting about this opportunity.

ragganald From: [info]ragganald Date: July 23rd, 2005 01:01 am (UTC) (Link)
not really.... i'm trying to get my art going but all my ideas are rooted in real media right now...i've recently started being naughtie on cam and commented to mrs pink yesterday asking for tips and warnings since you both seem to have been doing cam stuff for a long while(and it doesn't seem like veoh is in the same vein as pinkgasm)....for now i'll just observe to see if any of this seems compatible with where i'm at right now. i'll let you know if i have anythng to offer though

Actually, the network is more like Tivo. In that programs do not run at a set time. They are selected, then eventually become available to teh viewer. SO in that format, a channel is juist a collection of shows around a theme that a viewer can watch whenever they choose.

Live streaming will not be a part of veoh. That being said, it would be a PERFECT place to have music videos.
